Programs & Events
We have started a book and movie discussion group. We chose a group of books that have film adaptations and our objective is to read the book, watch the film, and then discuss both.
I think most of us have read books that are so vivid that we see them almost as a movie in our minds, and from time to time, perhaps even fantasize about who among our favorite actors and actresses we’d like to see playing certain roles. Inversely, there are also those of us who have viewed a film and then read that it was based on a novel by so and so…and from this have been enticed to read the book. The books and film adaptations that have been chosen are a mix of just that. We started this program in May of 2009. It continues to do well. So far we have viewed/read/discussed:
Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen. The Greer Garson/Laurence Olivier version will be shown on January 6th 2010 at 6p.m. The movie is approximately 118 minutes long. The Keira Knightly version will be shown on January 13th 2010 at 6p.m. The film is approximately 2 hours and 9 minutes long. Discussion of the book and films to follow on January 20th 2010 at 6p.m. Facilitator: Tamara Hoke
The Fellowship of the Ring, by J.R.R. Tolkien. We will be watching the extended version of the film over two evenings. The first half of the film will be viewed on February 24th, 2010 at 6p.m. The second half of the film will be shown on March 3rd 2010 at 6p.m. Discussion of the book and film to follow on March 17th 2010 at 6p.m. Facilitator: Sean Chase.
The library has purchased 10 copies of each book which may be signed out for 2 weeks. Folks may also wish to purchase their own copies. For more information call the library at 645-4062 or e-mail: thoke@jaynileslibrary.com.
